Whether you’re a chronic or situational sufferer, your worst travel nightmare is having a well-earned vacation ruined by an unreliable gut. Here are some common causes of vacation stomach problems and some prevention tips:
1 – Changes in Routine
If you’re prone to a nervous stomach, a simple change in your everyday routine can wreak havoc on your tummy. While dehydration is a common vacation sin, not getting enough daily fluids automatically slows down the body’s detoxification function. Make sure to bring a bottle of water with you while sightseeing or relaxing on the beach.
2 – Overindulgence in Unfamiliar Foods
When vacationing, it can be tempting to overindulge in all sorts of exotic goodies or excessive alcohol. Unfortunately, your stomach and liver may not be able to keep up, with you, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy.
Beware of unfamiliar food and tap water. When eating out, avoid ice, lemons, salad bars, and street vendor food. Cultures of restaurant lemons have shown similar results because lemons are not washed and peeled like other produce. Salad bars are often questionable because so many people hover over them and handle the food.
3 – Parasitic Infection

Parasites can be picked up not only in produce and ice cubes but also in water parks, hotel swimming pools (they survive chlorine).
